At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements close to the city's international airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the raid, along with multiple guns.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
