Adult Swim's Top New Show of 2025 Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
