New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, hesitated to declare this decision immediately following his victory in November.

"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
