Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Abound
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of classic genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
