During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the live show The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is understood of his research, the case most likely held some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
