The Gory Cartoon Movie Ending That Lingers Fans

Out of every adult-oriented animated films I have ever watched, no other has remained with me quite like the dread-soaked conclusion of the viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.

Back in the year 2015, this Spanish writer-director created a grim, bleak and often savage universe that included some tiny , desolate hints of optimism.

Although Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a desire to advance the medium further, the filmmaker stated that it was rather an effort to express a global, cross-cultural theme concerning “the shared root of each battle.”

That message is expressed by means of a band of colorful pastel bears , obviously based on a well-known line of cuddly figures.

Being raised in a culture built around warmongering as well as the defense industry, a lot of these creatures are fixated on slaughtering the mythical beasts, due to a holy book that claims them they were once kings of the forest, before these creatures forced them out.

Others have not completely accepted the indoctrination, , would rather sample substances or fornicate outdoors.

In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these vivid animals show genitals and obvious libidos.

For a certain particularly cruel, skeptical animal, Bluey, the conflict with unicorns transforms into a route toward dominance — and particularly to supremacy over his gentler, kinder brother the character Tubby.

This bear acts as a tormentor and a seeming antisocial figure , and when terror overcomes his unit and kills his fellow soldiers individually, he takes more and more control personally, in increasingly gory, destructive ways.

Simultaneously, the horned creatures are experiencing their own nightmare, as a spreading, destructive monster in their habitat.

“In the early stages, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “But then it evolves into a more serious and melancholic movie. And ultimately, it transforms into a horror film.”

Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the most playful films by a renowned filmmaker, that discover a naughty glee in permitting cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.

Then it evolves into more akin to a bleaker film by that same creator, including ever more graphic violence , a palpable link to the real suffering of conflict.

In the finale, it is an outright Grand Guignol massacre.

The terror which makes the film a perfect Halloween watch kicks in much sooner than that description suggests.

The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore fans of gore, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to watch a film they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and can endure a story which delivers unflinching brutality.

View it in a dark room without any distractions, and the finale will crawl deep within you and take up residence there.

Where to watch: Accessible via streaming or buying on several digital platforms.
