This Diamond Family Unofficial Video Game of the Year List for This Year
Well, how did you experience the past year in your family? Did it seem all as good as you pretended on online? Overflowing with top marks for the kids and riotous dress-up celebrations for the adults? Maybe it felt like a ocean of frustration with only rare entertaining highlights? Could any part be authentic, or is everyone now AI-generated AI slop beings with celebrity dental work?
I've assembled everyone together, ready or not, to debate the crucial thing in a calendar year: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Let's get started:
Title Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Release Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I suggested it. Fair enough.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Title the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Game I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he complains, I reply that I am behaving this way to build character so he can grow up and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is incredible. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that constantly evolve their range is you have a moment of clarity and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the late night after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was the previous year's breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets each element right. Crazy Poker is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Title I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the reader who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I share that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between business deals that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names called from the garden at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
