New South Wales police have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and handed out two traffic infringement notices for reported negligent driving after a swarm of electric bicycle users gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A group of approximately 40 people riding e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly then turned around and rode through the downtown area and Haymarket.

"There was potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated NSW police assistant commissioner David Driver on the following day.

Police indicated they did not chase right away the group due to concerns for public safety but rather found the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.

Penalties Issued for Content Creator

On Saturday, police announced they had served the US social media influencer known as Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a penalty of $562 and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge incident. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has over 3.4m followers on YouTube and more than 1.2m on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The content creator spoke with a local publication this week following the event spread rapidly on digital platforms, saying he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was among the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. When I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of e-bikes on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes since the invention of the early bicycle [but] the harm that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," he stated. "We’ve got to make sure we prevent these things entering the country [and] police are granted the powers to take strong action, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to destroy them."

NSW reported 226 injuries associated with ebikes in 2024. However, in the first seven months of 2025, that figure surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
