Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then located many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident left him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
